Campaign for Labour NOT the leadership

I've just been watching the breaking news about James Purnell's departure. I wrote a piece over at Labourhome (not in a Murdoch newspaper) on the Local and European Elections but I've added a few comments on this too.

I really think every party activist who knocked on doors and tried to get the vote out tonight will be pretty furious about this news. As I say in my piece, 'Not so much a Blairite as a careerite.'

Anyway, you can read my piece over a Labourhome here.

Well there's another fine mess we are in . We get 15% of the national vote and the people who run Hazel Blears's seat have decided she is there candidate for the next election despite having lost the support of the Labour Leader and having resigned on the day of an election.
How can this party be serious of running a 4th term when it flies in the face of the electorate on this issue and on not going for a new leader in the Autumn.

Thought you were a smart bloke John. Did you really think a bunch of Blairites would think about loyalty to the Labour Party? Think about it. New Labour grew out of the idea that Socialism was a gonner, and that we should reduce the role of the State. So without any political ideals, principle or integrity, we landed ourselves with a bunch of self interested careerists who were simply out to milk the system.
But with the Global Credit Crunch, we now see people being chucked out of their jobs and homes, and people are saying, maybe Capitalism isn't all it's been cracked up to be, and why isn't the State more involved in sorting things out. It's obvious that Labour will now have to take stock. While it's probably unrealistic to go back to Old Labour, we have to ditch New Labour, if we stand any chance of winning back the electorate. New Labour know this (which is why they are creating), and the establishment and right wing press know it (which is why they have been mounting such a campaign against us recently). Lets face it, the Press have known about abuse of the expenses system for years - so why has it only just become interesting?

I have always felt Gordon was badly treated by the media & not recognised for his bold attempts to rescue the banks, restimulate the economy, great G20 victory & help poorer families and many more things. Compared to many countries we are weathering this storm well.

But I am afraid we do live in an age of media saturation & our meltdown to 15% is not a media myth ; its real, its bloody and its even Wales. Our people have spoken. So I am sorry but we need a Heseltine figure to quickly begin the process of changing our leader as he did when he stood against Margaret Thatcher ; the movement is far bigger than one man and its current loyalty.

It is not fair to all those people who will suffer when the Tory Landslide happens next year; we need to have a few MPs who can stand up to the massive cuts to the public sector and the public sector employees.

Without some MPs there to fight on the people's behalf the party could be out for over 10 years. The time has come now I believe. However for Labour Commeth the hour commeth no man.

Miss Flint and Mr Purnell resigned because they could not agree on a settlement of the Miners Pension Fund

She being a mining community MP you can tell with the coal dust around her eyes and him being pensions secretary

The media made its mind up about Gordon Brown's fate the second it heard that Purnell quit. Yes, it was a damaging blow. And it could have led to a downfall. Could have. So wait and see how things unfold instead of arrogantly your preferred outcome: http://tinyurl.com/ngfx5y

Although I'm not a Labour supporter, I agree with you about this, John. Labour just didn't seem to have any presence or do any noticeable form of campaigning. Although the fault lies with Harriet Harman, you have to wonder why Gordon Brown didn't send out the troops to fight. For the good of the country, he really must resign or call a general election.

I see your point John but I am more angry with Hazel Blears resigning when she did and several MP's circulating their email and sending a copy to the press when they did, simply because it was hours before an election. How many former Labour councillors might have kept their seats otherwise!

Prescott, you're a war criminal who should be at The Hague, not writing blogs.
By supporting New Labour, you're also a traitor to the working class, but you've been told that many times, the trouble is your self-interest gets the better of you.

"I'm standing down from the cabinet today because I'm leaving front line politics," Mr Hutton told the BBC.

This from the Minister for Defence.
Such leadership.

Our young men and women in Afghanistan havent to opportunity to say "I'm leaving the front line"

How ironic that Blears,Smiths, Purnel, Hutton cannot find a standing ground. Runaways should have no future with the public, stay at home and join the Dole. First you have the cheek to Rob us Blatantly of Public Funds then you have the audacity to talk about Mr Browns leadership. Dig in to your own quilts and carry on your own skeletons we do not need you and would have loved to see you being fired instead.
Ginger Minger on a Bike. Smith who talks absolute crap.

I've just woken from a horrible dream, where I lived in a country like Zimbabwe, with a leader who hung onto power without a mandate from the electorate, surrounded himself with lackey's, and placed unelected people into made up jobs such a business secretary, and now Allan Sugar in charge of Tsarship Enterprise.
Not to mention a political class who have been milking the expenses system dry.
Then I woke up and nothing has changed.

John you should rename labourhome as Labour Come Home to attract the many people who left before and when project 2000 was implemented.

I have not voted labour after that time but have no intention of rejoining until all the shit is out. I see the Huddersfield party is getting to grips very quickly well done!

I have just read the front page of the Times and its editorial - Not one mention of Purnell being in the expenses trough and what that might have meant to his career.
Who can one trust in the media?

Purnell has learned what its like to be a real son of a single mum now he has been the DWP minister not like the upbringing he had.

He now realises he is in the wrong party and should be part of the 'Family Credit' Maggie team having a pint in the Cons club in Bridlington.

But remember before you vote it was the Labour Party who laid the new promenade not Maggie.

As an avid Labour supporter what is the most upsetting thing is the amount of back stabbing in the Labour party.

This was true in the case of Tony Blair; an admiral prime minister who was stabbed in the back by Brown and backed up by others in the party.

This is now happening with Brown...which could be suggested as retribution.

I really do wish that people would get on with the job they were elected to do and stop the infighhting or voters like me will have no other options than to jump ship!
